Steps For Successful Affiliate Marketing
58Before I begin with the steps for successful affiliate marketing, let explain what affiliate marketing is. Affiliate marketing is the process in which a merchant or vendor of a product will pay someone a portion of the cost of a product when that person refers a paying customer to the vendor.
As a referrer you are know as an affiliate; the vendor or merchant creates an affiliate program which generates specialized that incorporate a uniquely identifiable affiliate id and when a prospect clicks on this link drops a duration cooking on their computer and takes the prospect to the vendors website.
This cookie can be a short term cooking of 15 to 60 days or longer with some vendors providing one year or lifetime cookies (The longer duration cookies use a more sophisticated form of tracking referrals).
Many people looking to make money on-line generally do not have a product of their own to sell so they are the best candidates to take part in affiliate marketing; since you can start off with very little investment, you carry no inventory and you don't have to concern yourself with order process or customer service issues.
As an affiliate marketer you can promote physical products like computers, electronics, clothing, books.. and/or digital products like music downloads, software downloads, e-books, video downloads...
When an affiliate markets a physical product they can earn a referral fee or commission of from 1% to 25% depending on the product, while on the digital side an affiliate can earn up to 100% of a commission depending on how the vendor or merchant has structured the affiliate program.
Now with a 100% affiliate commission you may be wondering how the merchant makes money; this is usually done with back end offers that tie well with the initial product being sold. Since these products cost more and are sometimes not part of the commission process the merchants earn their money from this back end revenue stream sometimes they are one-time-offers (OTO) or since the merchant has the email address of the buyer, promotes directly to the customer you obtained for them.
This is a good deal for both the merchant and the affiliate because the merchant can have an army of people promoting his/her product cutting down on the merchants advertising budget, since this cost is now in the affiliate marketers hands as they need to promote their affiliate link either through article marketing, pay-per-click programs like Googles Adwords, pay for advertising on various websites, doing classified advertising on and off-line, forum posting...
Some places where a wanna be affiliate marketer can find products to promote are in what are called affiliate networks. The most widely known are:
Commission Junction
Linkshare
Shareasale
Shareresults
Clixgalore
Clickbank
PayDot
Plimus
MyHelpHub
ClickXchange
or directly from the vendor that sets up their own affiliate program.
Now that we have elaborated on what affiliate marketing is lets cover the steps for successful affiliate marketing.
The first thing you need to do as an affiliate marketer is identify an area of interest, typically one that you know something about or that you are passionate about. This makes it easier for you to promote the product you have chosen, since a prospect will be able to feel that you know not only what your talking about but that you are some that they can place their trust in as you endorse the product.
The second thing you need to do is locate merchants that are offering products and/or services that are related to your interest. You can use the above list as a starting point or you can Google your interest with the term affiliate. For example: “pet care affiliate” or “pet care affiliate program”.
Third: you will need to do some keyword research on your area of interest to know which are the most common keywords people are searching for on the Internet as these phrases will become part of your marketing tools.
Fourth: you will need to register a domain related to a keyword phrase that gets lots of search engine request and you're going to have to set up a web hosting account on which your going to build your affiliate business. For most of you starting a blog will be the best and easiest route to go. (I have several resources that you should invest in if your completely new at this for the most successful outcome.)
If you're wondering how you're going to create content for a blog, you can outsource or you can buy PLR content packages study the info and then write your own content based on your knowledge and experience. Note: It's never a good idea to just post articles from a PLR package, since others also have access to the same material and your blog will just look like a replicated site offering nothing new to it's readers.
When doing affiliate marketing I have found over the years that it's best to go with digital products since the payout is the highest. The best digital products affiliate center in my book is Clickbank with thousands upon thousands of products that you can choose from with commission payouts up to 75%.
Once you've made your niche selection, found a suitable program to promote, have put you blog up on your web hosting account with your targeted domain name; your ready to start promoting. You can promote your blog using ppc advertising, social networks, from posting or article marketing. The fast and best way is to use article marketing on sites like this one Hubpages, Squidoo, Helium, eHow...
The article post you create should be 250 to 350 words in length and lead the reader back to your blog for the complete article or a series of articles that builds upon you original posting. Within and/or on your blog you will then have the product that will help them in what they are trying to accomplish. You should also have on your blog a means to capture their contact information so that you can send them more information along with a product plug or to inform them of new blog postings.
Since twitter is really coming on strong you should also include a twitter plug-in so that your visitors can tweet your post to their friend. You should also have a twitter plug-in to tweet all your new post to your twitter followers.
