It's impossible today to not to hear a news story about the environment, global warming, going green or renewable energies and the impact that we as human beings are having on the planet we live.


No matter on what side of the camp you fall on, that being we have no effect on the planet and what we are seeing are just cyclical normal occurrence or that what we have been doing for the past hundred years has know caught up to us and that drastic change on our part is required to save the planet ourselves and the other lifeforms that inhabit it.


One thing can not be ignored, the resources we use to power or present day society are finite and that using these resources pollute the environment from the point of us extracting from the planet and in the by-products that result from there manufacture and use by the worlds consumers.


Since the measurable temperature of the planet is going up and we are seeing drastic melting of the ice caps and glaciers throughout the world a common issue that is made is that each of us has a carbon footprint that effects the climate of the earth. This applies more so on the industrialized nations of the world since they consume the largest amounts of fossils fuels like oil, coal and gas.


Thus conservationist state that we need to reduce our carbon footprint if we are going to start change this negative trend that is harming the planet. So what is your carbon footprint and how do you reduce your carbon footprint as a way in helping in the battle of climate change and reducing the amount of pollution we place into the environment.

Simply put your carbon footprint is your impact on the world based on the amount of energy you use in your everyday life. Every time you turn on a light in your home or office, watch tv, listen to the stereo, turn on your computer these action contribute to your carbon footprint.

Of course the aforementioned does not include those items which are on all the time like your refrigerator, and any electrical appliance that is always on like many of the remote controlled gadgets we have in our homes.

Another over looked carbon footprint impact is the products we buy and use, since many products today are manufactured from oil or are in some way totally dependent on oil for there production. Included in this category is our food and the bottle water so many people today just get do without.

For those foods and water that are not produced locally they must be imported, whether the products are shipped cross country or from the other side of the planet this requires energy to store and ship, which has a large impact on the environment as well as your pocketbook.

So what can you do to reduce your carbon footprint and help the environment and yourself at the same time (since lowering your carbon footprint also saves you money)?

Here are a few tips to help you reduce your carbon footprint.

Turn off an unused electrical devices – like computers, cable boxes, set top boxes, to do it easily use a power strip so you can turn off the power to all the devices.

Where feasible upgrade, you refrigerator, washing machine, clothes dryer, air conditioner, heating system.

If you own a home make sure it properly insulated, make sure you don't have leaky windows or doors.

Make sure your car is running at optimum efficiency to reduce fuel consumption

If you can upgrade you windows to high efficiency ones to reduce heat loss in the winter and heat build up in the summer.

If you consume lots of bottle water recycle a bottle and fill it up with filtered tap water. Plastic bottles are made from oil and reducing your purchase of bottle water not only saves on the production side, but also on the transportation of the product and the waste that ends up in land fills and the oceans.

Buy your fruits and vegetables locally, the one that are in season; buying out of season fruits and vegetables are not only more expensive but waste resources in there storage and shipment increasing your carbon footprint.

If you have a home get an energy audit done to determine what your energy hot spots are so you can reduce them which in turn saves you money.

If you can afford it, examine installing solar cell arrays, wind turbines or other renewable technologies. Since many local and federal programs exist to help pay for the purchase and installation this will ad value to your home and reduce the amount of energy you get from power grid. In many cases you can make money if you are producing more energy from these renewable technologies than you are using, the utility company will by the excess energy from you since you are now a producer.

If you can go with a hybrid or all electric vehicle and for you do-it-yourself types out there get yourself an electric car conversion guide and build your own electric car for far less than what you would pay from an auto dealership.

These are just some of the things you as an individual can do to reduce your carbon footprint and if we all act together we can have a dramatic and positive impact on the planet we live on. Remember this is the only planet we have and there's no other place for us to go to when everything goes down hill.
